In this class, we also analyzed stories, poems, and haikus. In order to understand the material better, we also discussed about stories and authors in class and I even did my final presentation (see below) and wrote my final paper (doc) on Osamu Daizai's Hashire Meros.
Because of this class, I gained basic knowledge about haikus and the basic skills to write and appreciate haikus and poems in Japanese. We also gained knowledge about famous poets and authors from Japan, such as Matsuo Basho who was a famous haiku poet (research notes). Another thing I gained in this class was basic skills to write a book report, such as summarizing a Japanese story. Also, I learned to cooperate with other classmates in order to understand Japanese short stories. By working together, we were able to discuss ideas and things that everyone
I want to improve my reading comprehension skills and learn more kanji. Also, I want to become more comfortable speaking in Japanese. There are a lot of cultural references I don’t understand because I do not have a lot of knowledge about Japanese history. Writing (essay, short story) and grammatical skills are other points I hope to improve.
In order to do this, I will read more in Japanese and make a point to read out loud. I will also build up kanji and vocabulary skills and also write in a journal every day in order to improve skills and improve vocabulary. Make my own haiku or short stories might be good practice. It is also important that I understand history and culture as a background knowledge and I hope that by studying abroad I will be able to.
